Perspectives…

One thing that I think we all get exposed to on a regular basis is the opportunity to excercise the concept of “perspective” in every situation we are faced with.  One of my first lessons as a student of Dr. Tae Yun Kim was about just this.  Dr. Kim put the concept in quite simple terms by taking a 6 sided box with a different picture on each side and asking a group of us to describe what we see; each of us standing in a different position looking at the box.  Of course each of our answers were different, none matching at all.  None of us were “wrong” about our description of what we saw, yet none of us could also argue that “our view” was the correct view because it just depended on where we were standing.  On top of the descriptions we all offered there was also the bottom view that none of us saw; and to go even deeper into the lesson Dr. Kim opened the box and revealed that there was indeed something INSIDE the box that none of us were seeing either.  Seems simple… but it can be very profound too.

All of us gave our own definitions of what “the box” was, yet in hearing all the additional “views” we were all enlightened about the additional aspects of the box that gave a much fuller picture of what “the box” was all about; including discovering what was inside the box as well.  How many times a day are we presented with “boxes” that we try and understand and make judgements and valuations on based on our “perspective” on the item?  The items can be as tangible as the box itself or as intangible as a feeling or concept.  I am constantly reminded that the simple lesson that was shared with me holds so much value and that there are so many opportunities to practice it if I choose to do so.  This last statement can be the most crucial aspect of the lesson.  Deciding to exercise this awareness is not necessarily a “natural” human reaction, but in doing so we open ourselves up to a much bigger world out there.

This is why I put a lot of value on this simple word/concept… PERSPECTIVE… check it out…
